A weekly cleaning routine for a busy home

You don’t need a free Saturday to keep a home in good shape. Short, flexible sessions spread across the week do more — and feel lighter.

A calm, tidy living room with a basket of cleaning supplies

Quick answer: Ten minutes a day for the basics, plus one 20-minute session per area — kitchen, bathroom, dusting, floors — sometime each week.

Big weekend cleans are hard to protect. Something always comes up, and a missed Saturday turns into a messy fortnight. A gentler approach works better: a few minutes every day, and a handful of tasks that belong to the week rather than to a specific day.

Every day: ten quiet minutes

  • Dishes done or in the dishwasher before bed
  • Kitchen counters and hob wiped
  • A quick reset of the living room: cushions, blankets, things back where they live
  • Bathroom sink and mirror wiped while the shower steam clears

This week: one area at a time

Give each area its own short session — around twenty minutes. The day you do it doesn’t matter; what matters is that it happens sometime this week.

  • Kitchen: fronts, fridge handles, sink and drain, a quick look in the fridge
  • Bathroom: toilet, shower or bath, tiles at splash height, floor
  • Dusting: shelves, surfaces, light switches and door handles
  • Floors: vacuum everywhere, mop the kitchen and bathroom
  • Textiles: towels and, every week or two, bedding

Every few weeks: the things you forget

The jobs that really slip are the ones that aren’t weekly: the dishwasher filter, the cooker hood filters, the washing machine seal. They take minutes, but only if someone remembers.

When the week doesn’t go to plan

Skip it. Really. A routine is there to help, not to judge. Pick the one area that matters most right now, do that, and let the rest roll into next week. Consistency over months beats perfection over days.

How often should you wash towels?

Bath towels, hand towels and tea towels each have their own rhythm. A few simple habits keep them fresh, soft and absorbent for longer.

Bath towels after 3–4 uses, hand towels every 2–3 days, kitchen towels every day or two.

  • A freshly made bed with soft linen and a folded throw

How often should you change your bedding?

Sheets, pillowcases, duvets and pillows all need fresh air and washing — just not at the same pace. Here is a rhythm that is easy to keep.

Sheets and pillowcases every 1–2 weeks; pillows and the duvet every 4–6 months.

  • An open dishwasher with a clean filter resting on a towel

How to clean a dishwasher filter

Gritty glasses and a stale smell usually point to one small part. Cleaning the filter takes about ten minutes and makes a real difference.

Every 2–4 weeks: twist the filter out, rinse it under warm water with a soft brush and refit it until it locks.
